After an embarrassingly low voter turnout in the Democratic primary and polls showing him neck and neck with Glenn Youngkin, Washington insider Terry McAuliffe is calling in Joe Biden to save his stale campaign. Even Jeff Shapiro of the Richmond Times-Dispatch noted that Biden’s unusually early campaign appearance could spell trouble for McAuliffe and his uninspired base.
Shapiro isn’t the first person to note the lack of enthusiasm for McAuliffe. Former Governor Doug Wilder has been an outspoken critic of McAuliffe’s, mainly due to his hypocrisy in touting disgraced Gov. Ralph Northam’s endorsement against 3 African-American political leaders in the primary while previously calling for Northam to resign during his blackface scandal.
McAuliffe’s past remarks on Biden’s competency will also come back to haunt him during the Arlington rally. When Biden was facing mounting criticism for hiding in his basement during the 2020 presidential election, McAuliffe was caught on tape saying Democrat operatives preferred that Biden stay in his basement for the duration of the campaign due to his lack of stamina and appeal.
FoxNews: “People say all the time, ‘Oh, we got to get the vice president out of the basement,'” McAuliffe told the “monthly breakfast” of the Norfolk City Democratic Committee. “He’s fine in the basement. Two people see him a day: his two body people. That’s it.”
“Joe Biden’s decision to campaign with Terry McAuliffe at such an early stage should sound alarm bells for Virginia Democrats,” said Virginia Rising Executive Director Tucker Davis. “Washington Insider Terry McAuliffe has generated such little enthusiasm among his base that he’s already been forced to bring in his party’s highest profile surrogate.”
