For The Third Time, Gov. Northam Changes Plans for School Re-Opening

The people of Virginia deserve a Governor that will lead our Commonwealth with conviction and certainty, not a Magic 8 Ball.

On Thursday, the Northam Administration notified school districts that re-opening their respective school systems would be left entirely up to them after facing backlash from legislators, school administrators and parents. Virginia State Senator Bill Stanley told the Martinsville Bulletin in an interview Thursday that the Governor’s decision left him more confused than ever.

“The problem is that the governor’s plan puts restrictions on localities and then leaves localities with no direction on how to accomplish the limitations that he sets up or the goals that he has for them, which is going to create inconsistency between school board to school board. There is a limitation especially on rural areas — you can’t have more than 10 students on a school bus — we don’t have enough school buses, we don’t have enough school bus drivers, and we don’t have enough hours in the day to properly and safely get the students to and from school. It puts everything else in a tailspin.”

To make matters worse, on Friday, Gov. Northam did a complete about-face on those plans by announcing that he may not open Virginia Schools at all in the coming weeks if the Commonwealth could not remain in Phase 3 of the re-opening process.

The Director of the Center for Disease Control, Robert Redfield, recently told The Hill that keeping schools closed could actually do more harm than good. The American Academy of Pediatrics also issued a strong statement in favor of re-opening schools citing that children are less likely to transmit the disease.

Gov. Northam is using students, parents and educators in his own contrived and whimsical social experiment. The people of Virginia deserve a Governor that will lead our Commonwealth with conviction and certainty, not a Magic 8 Ball.
